The Nicoya Peninsula is one of the 5 Blue Zones in the world. People in a Blue Zone live happily and healthily into extreme longevity. A Blue Zone is also characterized by a high concentration of persons over 100 years who are mostly disease and disability free.
The other Blue Zone regions in the world are located in Japan, Italy, Greece, and the 7th Day Adventist community in Loma Linda, California.
Researchers have found that people living in Blue Zones share similar lifestyle characteristics that contribute to their outstanding health and longevity.
These include:
- A focus on familial relationships
- Consistent, moderate physical activity
- Less alcohol and/or tobacco use
- A diet based primarily on plants
- Social engagement with family, friends, and community.
The term was popularized by author-educator-explorer Dan Buettner in his 2008 book “The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from People Who’ve Lived the Longest” published by the National Geographic Society. He explains why these populations live healthier and longer lives based on his observations and empirical data.
